Jewelry Specific Questions:

Diamond grading is is an educated opinion, not an exact science.
You should never buy a diamond based on a certificate or grades alone. Two diamonds with the same grades could vary wildly in price and appearance. It is always best to compare diamonds on a side by side basis and what appeals to your eye, and budget.
The size and location of inclusions can greatly impact the price of a diamond. Flaws are natural but come in different shapes, sizes and color. A black flaw in a diamond can make that diamond less expensive than a white flaw.
-
The cut refers to the diamond's ability to reflect light and the shape is the appearance of the diamond. Most diamond shapes are round, square can be cushion, rectangular princess, emerald, radiant and asscher, heart-shaped, pear-shaped, oval, or marquise (pointed on both ends).
-
Diamonds are grade on a scale based on their color from the side of a diamond. The common GIA (Gemological Institute of America) scale most widely used is D (colorless) through Z (light color). All diamonds with the grades D-Z diamonds are considered white, even the brown and black ones although they contain varying degrees of color. True fancy colored diamonds such as yellows, pinks, and blues are graded on a separate color scale.
-
Diamond clarity is a grading system that involves evaluating the number, size, relief, nature, and position of a diamond's inclusions and blemishes.
-
Diamonds are sold by the carat (shown as ct.), which is actually a unit of weight, though most think of a carat in terms of size.
-
Carat is a unit of weight by which we measure diamonds. A jeweler will measure a diamond at 1.00 carats, or 100 points. ¾ carat is .75 points, ½ carat is 50 points and ¼ carat is 25 points. This allow for precise measurements of a diamond.
Karat is the measure of purity of gold. Jewelry karat is a quantitive measurement for the amount of pure gold:
91.7% = 22 karat
75% = 18 karat
58.3% = 14 karat
41.7% = 10 karat

A wedding set typically is made up of two pieces. The engagement ring and the wedding band. The engagement ring is presented at the time of the engagement. It is the more significant of the two pieces and worn during the engagement. At the wedding ceremony the wedding bands are exchanged and put next to the engagement ring. The wedding band is then put on the finger first so it is closest to the heart. The engagement ring follows and snugs next to it. It is advisable to have the ring soldered or joined together in a permanent bond so that they do not rub or wear on each other and it is easier to put on and take off.
